NIIGATA, Japan - Junior high school students in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, release balloons to express thanks for public support for disaster victims on the fifth anniversary of a massive earthquake that killed 68 people. A memorial ceremony was held in the city with around 650 people offering prayers for victims of the magnitude-6.8 Niigata-Chuetsu quake that hit the region at 5:56 p.m. on Oct. 23, 2004.
